《像天一样高》的主人公都是一些年轻人，小西、康赛、阿原、晏子，是诗歌、高原、反现代的朴素的生活理想使他们走到了一起。然而，随着生活的次第展开，现实与理想的冲突越来越激烈。在这群年轻人当中，阿原似乎一开始就没有真正走进诗性世界，或者说，他是一个企图在精神与物质层面都得到圆满的人，在残酷的肮脏的生意场之外，他希望有一个灵魂的驿站，有花的点缀与诗的装饰。当然不能说阿原的人性完全泯灭，但当这两者出现不可调和的分裂时，他是宁愿牺牲精神的，在作品中，阿原有着极强的社会适应性与生存能力，是第一个"清醒者"。晏子的问题出在梦想与现实的落差中，这是一个在世俗中对生活有许多浪漫的幻想的姑娘，而且这个幻想是建立在世俗标准的幸福之上的，她轻易地将这两者划上了等号，将它们建立了因果关系。
