Kathleen is busy running the library and planning her upcoming wedding to detective Marcus Gordon when she suddenly stumbles across a body in the library. She is surprised to learn that the deceased was in the middle of an unlikely heist—it seems he was trying to steal one of the paintings that had been in a box in the library’s workroom. Kathleen never knew any of the library’s rotating artwork was valuable and can’t imagine what the dead man wanted with it.
But then an art history expert called in by the police identifies the almost-purloined painting as a piece that might have been part of a previous high profile art theft. Owen’s and Hercules’s whiskers are already twitching, and events soon make Kathleen realize that whoever killed the wannabe art thief has more than murder on their mind. Kathleen and her clever cats will have to work fast to prevent anyone else from getting hurt.

Librarian Kathleen Paulson should be preparing for her wedding with detective Marcus Gordon. Instead, she's caught up in another mystery. Will Redfern, the original contractor for the library renovations, went to prison after assaulting Kat. Now he's out and wants a second chance. Kat agrees to meet with him at the library, but on arrival at their rendezvous, she finds his body; it looks like he was trying to steal a painting. No one in town has a good word to say for Will, but Kat decides to investigate. She soon learns the painting might have been stolen six years ago. How did the painting end up at the library, and why does someone break into Kat's house? Owen and Hercules, her magical cats, try to warn Kat off the case. But it's Marcus's reckless attempt to help that endangers the couple. VERDICT Although the 16th in Kelly's "Magical Cats Mystery" series (after Paws To Remember) is, like the others, a cozy mystery, it's also a story of chosen family. Fans of the series and romantic cozies will enjoy the wedding and "happily ever after" premise.--Lesa Holstine

An amateur detective is approaching happily-ever-after with her beau, but she's committed to one last case as a way to support a murdered man she let down in life. While some might picture the life of a librarian for Mayville Heights Free Public Library to be normcore, Kathleen Paulson's is anything but. Not only has she had a hand in solving a string of mysteries in her small Minnesota suburb, but the helpers she's relied on in doing this work have ranged from her fiance, Det. Marcus Gordon, to her two magical cats, Owen and Hercules. Owen, originally from an unusual cat colony on Wisteria Hill, has the ability to disappear and reappear seemingly at will, and Hercules can walk through walls and other solid objects. Both are pretty handy to have around when mystery calls, as it does once again when Kathleen finds that Will Redfern has broken into the library and been killed mid-burglary. A fighter for the underdog, Kathleen vows to solve Will's murder as a way of caring for someone society had given up on. She also continues her mentorship of Riley Hollister, a bright young girl whose family hasn't been there for her time and again. With Kathleen's wedding to Marcus just two months away, her schedule is full of cake tastings and bridesmaid dress approvals, but she can't help but try to solve Will's murder, maybe this time with Riley's help.
